Operating Permits & Line Inspections

If you own a private high-voltage powerline, you are required by your respective municipal and provincial safety authority (Technical Safety BC) to provide a designated Field Service Representative (FSR) under your operating permit.

The designated FSR guarantees the safe operation of all primary high-voltage (HV) equipment. Our FSR develops a comprehensive site plan and provides scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance on your HV equipment as required.

Line Inspections & Site Plan Outlining

Metro Power provides complete line inspections for private HV power lines performed by a qualified Powerline Technician:

  • Compilation of GPS pole coordinates delivered in a Google Earth KMZ file.
  • Detailed pole-top hardware and insulator inspection using high-resolution drones.
  • Comprehensive photo package of each pole (base/gain, North, East, South & West views of pole top, including any structural or electrical deficiencies).
  • Supply and installation of weather-resistant PVC pole ID tags (custom ID format available upon request).
  • Detailed CSV asset register documenting structure type, height, species, class, condition, treatment, and engineering recommendations.
  • Core sample testing of wood poles for internal rot, inclusive of treated drill-hole plugging.
  • Preparation of a prioritized remediation timeline based on urgency, with full photo documentation.

What Is Electrical Supply Installation?

Supply installation connects your new acreage home, commercial facility, farm, or greenhouse operation directly to the BC Hydro power grid.

We design, engineer, permit, and install your new primary power source, ensuring you have the exact transformer capacity and voltage stability required for heavy-duty equipment.

Electrical supply installations include municipal and Technical Safety BC permitting, engineered drawings with professional seals where required by law, and full coordination of construction inspections.

Do You Need Supply Installation?

Ideal for property owners connecting primary power to:

  • Custom Homes & Estates (more than 30m away from main BC Hydro power lines)
  • Agricultural Farms, Dairy Operations & Wineries
  • Commercial Greenhouses & Processing Facilities
  • High-Voltage Primary Services (25kV / 14.4kV / 7.2kV) and heavy 3-phase machinery

How Supply Installation Works

  1. STEP 01Initial Consultation: Review your load requirements, distance from main BC Hydro lines, and heavy machinery specs.
  2. STEP 02On-Site Engineering Assessment: Schedule an on-site meeting to survey the routing corridor and energy requirements.
  3. STEP 03Proposal & Layout: Receive a transparent quote and planned layout of your overhead or underground supply system.
  4. STEP 04Permitting & BC Hydro Liaison: We contact BC Hydro and the local municipality to initiate the electrical permitting process.
  5. STEP 05Engineering & Design: Upon quote acceptance, we produce formal engineered drawings.
  6. STEP 06Regulatory Coordination: We manage ongoing communication with regulatory bodies and inspectors.
  7. STEP 07Turnkey Construction: With design approval, our line crew builds and installs the poles, ducts, transformers, and conductors.
  8. STEP 08Final Compliance & Energization: After construction, we submit final declarations of compliance to BC Hydro to energize your service.
TECHNICAL BRIEFING & FAQ

Supply Installation & Inspections: Frequently Asked Questions

01 //Who needs a High-Voltage Operating Permit in British Columbia?

Any property owner, strata, farm, or industrial site in BC with private high-voltage equipment (over 750V, such as 12kV or 25kV primary poles and transformers) is legally required by Technical Safety BC to hold an active Operating Permit with a named Field Service Representative (FSR).

02 //How often should private wood utility poles be inspected?

Private high-voltage poles and overhead lines should undergo visual and drone inspection every 1–2 years, with physical sound-and-bore (core sample) testing at the groundline to detect internal decay before a pole fails during a storm.
